Created by Bombardier, the Q400 goes by many names. The two-engine regional turboprop aircraft also goes by the name De Havilland Canada Dash-8-400. While the name sounds completely technical, there are many things about this aircraft that’s unique and interesting. Part of the Q-series, the Bombardier Q400 features new interiors and better performance numbers when compared to other aircrafts in its line. It provides various upgrades such as better fuel efficiency and jet-like speeds. Chances are if you’ve traveled in the Alaska-Canada area, you’ve probably been on one of the aircraft in the Q-series. Here are some of the things that set the Q400 apart from the rest.

1. Small plane

The X-Plane General Discussions Forum; Existing user? Dash 8 q400 Sign in to follow this. We have a special X-Plane 10 scenery package for the Oshkosh Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH), enhanced with buildings, custom objects, and aircraft, all designed around the annual AirVenture Expo. Each year sees thousands of fly-in aircraft, campers, and visitors to this huge aviation event sponsored by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). The Q400 aircraft is equipped with a R408 type six bladed composite propeller supplied by Dowty. The propeller is equipped with an electric current removal system. Overall, the Q400 aircraft has a length of 32.84 m, a height of 8.36 m, and a wing span of 28.42 m. The MJC8 Q400 addon for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Lockheed Martin Prepar3d is a highly realistic rendition, built after the Bombardier (tm) Dash8 Q400 aircraft. There are 3 editions, differentiating in the price and the included features.

The Q400 is designed to only accommodate for 76 passengers, and they’re all coach. The plane also seats two pilots and two flight attendants. The smaller plane size means that the plane can fly faster, which means more flights offered per day. As a matter of fact, since the release of the Q400, there have been at least 2 more flights per day in the Alaska-Fairbanks route.

2. 2×2 seating

X Plane 11 Q400 Liveries

For most people, seating is very important in a plane regardless of how long the travel time may be. The Q400 offers only a 2×2 seating option, which means that you’ll always have either the window or aisle seat. There are no dreaded middle seats to cringe about. The 2×2 seating is great for those who travel solo or double or even families of whatever size.

3. Flying in the cold

This aircraft was designed to fly in the most extreme cold temperatures that can handle even the worst that Alaska has to offer. They can operate safely even in that scenario, so you can expect that the Q400 is one of the safest aircrafts around. It’s been operational for a while now and has proven to be efficient and safe ever since its maiden flight in 2000.

4. Total in fleet

There are a total number of 47 Q400s in operation currently, flying across the Alaskan skies daily. That’s a great number of planes that can carry passengers back and forth various destinations throughout the area. The 47 Q400s are all fairly new as well in terms of the aviation industry, so you can be guaranteed a newer interior regardless.

5. Faster jet

The Bombardier Q400 gets to 300 miles faster than any other jet aircraft currently. The Q400 is able to do this because it only needs to reach 25,000 feet in order to reach its cruise speed. Other jets will have to reach their cruise speeds at 33,000 feet or beyond. While its still slower than the 737 at 415 mph, it’s fast enough to do what it’s supposed to do.

6. Quiet travels

You might notice that the Q400 is a lot quieter compared to other jet aircrafts its size. It’s actually quiet both on the inside and the outside of the plane. This is because the Q400 is built with the ANVS (Active Noise and Vibration Suppression) system. This system creates vibrations that cancel out the vibrations made by the engine and propeller blades, which makes for a quieter ride altogether.

7. Toronto

The Bombardier Q400 is assembled at the Toronto Downsview airport in Toronto, Canada. From there, the aircraft travels to its destination where it starts its given route. Since the Q400 operates mainly in the Canada and Alaska areas, the aircraft doesn’t have to travel far in order to operate.

8. Advanced propulsion

This aircraft features twice the usual horsepower of a typical turboprop. The Q400 offers 5,071 shp. Its engine, the PW150A, is considered to be the most advanced commercial turboprop engine available today. The six-blade Dowty propellers on the Q400 are a marvel on their own, delivering more thrust with less noise in comparison to other models.

9. Advanced cockpit

You can expect this given that it’s a newer aircraft model, but Bombardier has taken the cockpit to the next level with the Q400. This aircraft features the most advanced avionics that Thales can provide. It features 5 LCD screens to better help pilots navigate. It also features a modular design to make repairs and upgrades easy.

10. More names

As we’ve said earlier, the Bombardier Q400 goes by a lot of different names. Here are the other names that the aircraft goes by—but they’re all one and the same: De Havilland Dash-8-Q400, De Havilland Canada Dash-8-400, De Havilland Canada Dash-8-Q400, De Havilland DHC-8-400, De Havilland DHC-8-Q400, Bombardier Dash-8-400, Bombardier Dash-8-Q400, Bombardier DHC-8-400, Bombardier DHC-8-Q400, DH8D and DH4.

TheWeather Radar is capable of interpolating the weather returns, based onthe actual FSX weather, using the FSX Weather Stations reports. TheWeather Radar can work with both the FSX Real Weather, and the WeatherEnvironment addons capable of setting the per-station weather. The PRO version of the Q400 is capable of reading the weather radar data from the ASN. The beam geometry is also simulated in order to depict the weather based upon the aircraft altitude, antenna tilt and the altitude of the weather itself. There is a ground clutter and the weather shadow effects. In addition there is a ground mapping mode simulation, capable of showingthe surrounding terrain. The weather clutter in the ground mode is alsosimulated.
TheTraffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) simulates most of the ICAOdefined CASII functions, and provides the traffic indication, as wellas the traffic and resolution advisories. The TCAS works with both theAI traffic, and the virtual ATC network traffic (Vatsim/IVAO..)
Thedual Flight Management System, included in the package is built afterthe Universal ™ 1E FMS, and is developed with a high degree ofdetalization. The FMS system is capable of navigation in 3 dimensions(LNAV+VNAV), the RNP based navigation, the Fuel and PerformanceManagement. Inaddition to the default announcements included with the aircraft, ourscripting based announcement system allowes for building the customannouncements both per-livery or global. The announcement script canplay the user defined sound files based upon the current condition ofthe aircraft systems and control states, thus allowing for a verycustomized and realistic announcement flows, specific to the particularairlines.
TheFMS FPL winds functionality which is currently in development, and willbe provided in the version 1.1 update, will allow the FMS to accountfor the enroute winds, thus increasing the fuel and time predictionaccuracy.
Whensaving or loading the flight in the Flight Simulator, the systems willalso store or retrieve their respective states
Ourproduct includes its own Sound System, independant of the MicrosoftFlight Simulator sound system. The sound system is Direct X based, andis using the custom DSP (Digital Signal Processing) effects to simulatethe propeller sounds correctly. In addition, the system is 3D enabledfor both the external and internal sounds, including the switches andcontrols sounds, as well as the voice announcements.
TheAddon Control Panel Application (CPAN) allowes the user to visuallymodify the most important parameters of the aircraft, as well as verifyand apply the custom Weight and Balance configurations.
TheShared Cockpit is the way for two users to share the same cockpit overthe network. Our Shared Cockpit syncronizes 2 instances of the addonover the home network or the internet. It is also possible to invite athird person to the cockpit as observer.
Ourproduct is coming with a sophisticated scripting system, which can beused to set the scenarios for any failures in the airplane. Thescenario can be random as well as triggered by the predefinedconditions (engine failure on V1, for example). The scenarios can alsobe written by the users and include the scenario flow logic as well asthe custom sound playback.
A number of default failures will occur at a rate close to that in the real life. An aircraft can be made more reliable or less reliable as desired by the user. TRAINING contains more extensive list of the random failures than the PRO edition
TheHGS allowes for operation of the aircraft under weather minimums up toCAT IIIa. Our HGS includes a system control panel and the HeadupDisplay. The HGS system also accounts for the pilot head position andview angle in a Virtual Cockpit.
Configurabledirect link to the joystick axis, allowing for 125Hzfrequency of controlling the Flight Dynamics (as opposite to 30Hzfrequency of the FSX), as well as bypassing the extensive filtering ofFlight Controls by the FSX
Inthe PRO edition and higher, our Sound System can, in addition to the 3Dmode, be configured to reproduce the particular sound groups via thededicated speaker(s), such enabling the sophisticated home simulationsetups. In addition, the sound system supports a second sound device(including the USB headsets) which can be used to separately output theheadphone sounds.
TheTouch Control Steering mode allowes the pilot to use the control columnmovements to command the autopilot mode parameters, such as altitude, vertical speed and the indicated airspeed adjustments, without havingto disengage the autopilot.
TheEqual Time Point (ETP) and Point of No Return (PNR) calculations arethe advanced functions of the Performance management (PERF), usedduring the navigation in the deserted areas (oceanic navigation,deserts...) in order to verify that the aircraft has sufficient fuel toproceed to the selected destination in the normal and/or abnormalconditions.
Thefull set of the 2D panels, which can be used to fly the aircraft the'traditional' way, or build a multiscreen cockpit by moving the panelsonto the multiple monitors.
Weprovide the simulation for all the circuit breakers in the cockpit withthe correct mapping between the circuit breakers and the electricalequipment. The circuit breakers popup on short circuit is alsosimulated
Inthe cases of the main gear retraction/extension system failre, the gearcan be manually extended by using the alternate gear extensionmechanism, which includes a manual hydraulic pump and a nose gearrelease assembly
Isan external application, which can be used to monitor the status of theaircraft systems and apply the selected system failures over thenetwork. In the PRO edition, Electric, Hydraulic and Avionics systems are included. In theTRAINING edition also Powerplant and Flight Controls systems are added
Inthe TRAINING edition, the flight controls can be disconnected and therespective independant flight controls system will account for thepilot flying position (based upon the pilot head position in theVirtual Cockpit, or the type of the main panel in the 2D cockpit).
TheCockpit Hardware Interface is a UDP based network interface, whichallows the numerous MJC8 Q400 components, such as our separateinstrument executable, the 2D panel executables, as well as the custombuilt Dash-8 hardware - to be linked, enabling the user to build a fullor a partial hardware cockpit
A distributable which can run under the supported by the Q400 flight simulators (please see installation requirements below), containing just the 2D panels such as separate left and right pilot panels, lower and higher center panels, overhead and the glareshield panel- which can be linked via the network to the 'host' instance of the Q400
FMSwill provide the RAIM prediction, and simulate the changing GPSaccuracy accordingly
Aresimulating the ARCDU maintenance interface with the appropriate errorcodes, thus allow to augment the technicians training
